The 2007 Mendocino is a little different from past vintages. Instead of being dominated by cherry aromas, this leans more towards a mixed bowl of berries. The other interesting point is an aroma like a rustic mountain cabin with fresh red meat and spices being prepared for dinner and then freshly baked wild berry pies for dessert - of course the wood stove damper is not working well so there is a little smoke in the room...

The tannins are soft and supple, but the acidity comes through with a bit more acid structure than in past vintages and stays with you till the cows come home. We always add a little Syrah and Petite Sirah for the mid palate, filling in the hole of the donut, but this year it is a little more pronounced in the flavors and aromas, hence the gamey and meatiness underneath all the mixed fruits.

With aging the wine should evolve into a very layered and complex Zinfandel, with toast and spice from the oak picking up in intensity and the creaminess becoming more apparent after a few years.
Five Stars (Exceptional)
"The Mendo bottling is fleshy and full bodied, with intense fruit character and a long finish. It tastes of plum, cherry, blackberry, toast, spicy oak, and raspberry. Great value."

The Zeni Zinfandels are almost always old-world style wines. The 2006 has a lot of earthiness and dark brooding aromas that are not often found in Zinfandel. Deep raspberries, cassis and creamy oak embody an old-world funkiness of smoked meats, cedar box and forest. This is a powerhouse wine: concentrated and intense — a dark, brooding beast of a wine with layers of funk. It should be reserved only for wild nights when the moon is full.
"Tasty."
"Flavors led by cherry, cranberry, and rhubarb and laced with fine tannin and nice acidity. It finishes long and medium-broad. Well balanced, structured, and integrated."

This wine has a bit of a split personality. From the young vines we get a healthy dose of youthful angst – dark dense and brooding, kinda like your 15-year-old nephew. But on the flip side it shows a mature, powerful body structure – wise beyond its years. The combination is intense. Look for an overload of wild blueberries, dark chocolate and dried cherries, with an underbelly of vanilla bean, toast and spice. This is a true mountain Zin.

Aromas and flavors of ripe black raspberries and black cherries balanced with minerality and a touch of earthiness on the palate. Leans toward a fuller body style, but without becoming flabby. The finish on the 2007 Ciapusci is long and lingering marked with cherry tartness. The intensity of fruit and the structure that these old vines consistently provide will allow this wine to last for at least ten years in a good cellar. But, if you like your Zinfandels fresh and lively, it is drinking fine right out of the gate.
“The dark ruby-colored 2007 Zinfandel Ciapusci Vineyard is a peppery, spicy, intense effort with fragrant aromatics as well as full-bodied flavors with plenty of spice and earth intermixed with a hint of herbs. It is a beautiful Zinfandel to enjoy over the next 5-7 years”

The Perli Vineyard Zin is composed with multiple varieties, creating a Zin that leans more toward a Claret in style. Bramble berries and spice are the predominant aromas, but you can also find hints of toffee, fresh flowers, chocolate and nectarines. The flavors are soft and supple with loads of cherries interlaced with berries, finished with stone fruits and an aftertaste approaching infinity or at least until you take another sip.

"This is a powerfully explosive Zin. Fully dry, it's packed with black currant, cassis, plum jam, dark chocolate and spice flavors that are wrapped into hard tannins."
Wine Enthusiast - 4/09
"This zin ripened to lush blackberry and fig flavors. It's enriched by oak, smooth and supple, delicious sweet. Catch it as a young wine with roast squab or other game birds."

Piffero’s perfumed black cherry fruit is the first aroma out of the glass, but the rhubarb pie aroma is a close second. The bright fruit flavors combine with darker aromas of an evergreen forest and mint followed by dark chocolate and coffee. The 2005 vintage shows great structure and smooth chalky tannins, with a long salted apple finish. The wine has concentrated layers of spice and oak influences of toasty vanillin. After tasting the wine, it makes you want to go out and get a piece of pie – rubarb, cherry or an italian pizza pie

Raspberries and cinnamon spice forms the core of the aromatics with slight volatile acidity brightening up the overall aromas and adding a zing to the finish, which is sweet on entry but ends with mouthwatering acidity. Underlying aromas of nectarines and peaches match the stone fruit flavors on the palate and the peach pit finish. The aftertaste is long lasting and makes you want another sip. A refreshing late harvest wine that would be great with cheese plates and dark chocolate bars.
